Orthodontics

Straighten your teeth and gain confidence with orthodontic treatment from PacificWest Dental Group!

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the alignment of teeth and guiding the growth and development of facial bones and jaws

What Is an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are experts at lining up and straightening jaws and teeth. Requiring an additional two to three years of specialty training beyond dental school, orthodontists treat kids and adults for many problems, from crowded or spaced teeth to jaw growth and alignment issues. Using braces, retainers, and a lot of love and laughter, an orthodontist creates beautiful smiles.

Orthodontists are dentists who specialize in straightening the jaws and teeth. They can diagnose and treat several issues, including crooked or misaligned teeth, overcrowding, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. Our team offers braces and Invisalign to straighten your smile and give you the confidence you deserve. Call PacificWest to book a consultation today.

What Can an Orthodontist From PacificWest Dental Group Do For You?

Whether you’re getting braces or emergency orthodontic treatment, the team at PacificWest Dental Group is here for you. Here are the treatment options available at our Metro Vancouver offices.

Braces and Invisalign

Braces and Invisalign are great treatment options that straighten your teeth and can give you the smile of your dreams. Here’s what we offer at our office:

Pacific West Dental Metal Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most affordable and highly effective orthodontic treatment.

Gold Braces

Gold Braces

Opt for gold braces for visual appeal. Constructed with 24K gold plating, they function the same as traditional metal braces, offering effective treatment at a reasonable price point.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are translucent and have a subtle appearance. Although not completely invisible due to the presence of the metal wire, ceramic braces are much less noticeable than traditional braces. However, they have a slightly bulkier profile and are more fragile than metal braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are the only orthodontic treatment considered completely invisible. They are placed behind the teeth and cannot be seen outside the mouth.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a system of clear, plastic, removable aligners custom made to provide a precise fit over your teeth. Wearing each aligner for a designated amount of time, the teeth are gently pushed into the final position. As a removable appliance, you can take out the aligners to eat or attend important functions. However, effectiveness is highly dependent on wear time, so it would be best if you wear the aligners 20-22 hours daily for the treatment to succeed.

We are confident PacificWest Dental Group’s professional and friendly service will meet your needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their consultation appointment by age seven. It allows orthodontists to evaluate the child's dental development and to identify orthodontic issues early on.

Dental issues, including crooked or misaligned teeth, overcrowding, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites, can be addressed by orthodontic treatment.

The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the recommended treatment options. On average, treatment can last from several months to a few years. PacificWest Dental Group provides customized treatment plans to suit each patient.

Yes! However, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces during contact sports. Additionally, playing an instrument with braces may have an adjustment period.

We are pleased to have Dr. Wang, Dr. Lee, Dr. Cheng, and Dr. Chiang overseeing the orthodontic treatment of our patients. Each of our orthodontists is Certified Specialists in Orthodontics. Learn more about our orthodontists here.

The teams at both of our locations provide equal quality care, and we want you to choose the location that is most convenient for you.

General

Having crooked teeth or a misaligned bite can affect more than how your smile looks. Severely crowded dentition is more difficult to clean, and may result in higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Other common malocclusion such as crossbite and deepbite can cause uneven wear to the teeth and extra stress to the jaw joint. Check out our Orthodontics page for more information.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has so much passion and love in the art of moving teeth, they spend 2-3 more years in specialty school to learn the knowledge and skill in orthodontics. Additionally, they need to pass the rigorous national board examination (The Royal College of Dentists of Canada, National Dental Specialty Examination) in order to become a certified specialist in Canada. Finally, because a certified orthodontist usually will limit his or her practice to orthodontics only, they have much more experience in diagnosing malocclusion and providing treatments than a family dentist.

Whether a case can be treated by a family dentist depends on the complexity of the malocclusion and the experience and training of the family dentist. Many family dentists have great interest in orthodontics and will take courses to obtain knowledge and experience in providing braces treatment. In fact, the orthodontists at PacificWest Dental have hosted many study clubs to help our family dentist colleagues learn about orthodontics.

You should ask your family dentist what kind of training he or she has in orthodontics, if he or she treated cases like yours before, and does he or she have photos of the case that he has completed to show you. We will be more than happy to provide you with a second opinion if you have any questions about your teeth!

Orthodontic treatment is suitable for people of all ages, whether young or old. Starting from the age of 7, we recommend taking your child to visit us so that we can monitor his or her teeth and jaw growth, and keep an eye out for potential problems. Learn more about our approach here.

Braces work by gently pulling and pushing the teeth to guide them into alignment. The real working horse in this process is the wire. Think of your teeth as a set of trains; braces are the wheels on the train, and the wire is the rail. It is the wire that guides the teeth where to go.

But how does the physical force from the wire actually make teeth move? Teeth are suspended in the bone by a collection of ligaments. When teeth are under pressure, these ligaments are squashed, and they release signals to call for cells (osteoclast) to come to remove the bone surround them (so they could become unsquashed).  After the teeth have moved into new position, another type of cell (osteoblast) will come to build new bones around the teeth to secure it in the new position. And this is how braces work to move your teeth!

At the initial consultation, we want to understand your needs and provide you with treatment options. In order to do this, we will need your medical and dental history, and any questions you may have!

This is the million dollar question! The cost of braces is based on several factors like the complexity of your case, how long treatment will take and which type of appliances you choose (metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign® or lingual braces). And because each patient receives a different treatment plan customized to his or her need, the cost will also be different.

Rest assured that during the consultation with Dr. Wang and Dr. Lee, financial figures will be discussed in depth. At PacificWest Dental Group, we work together with our patients to ensure treatment is affordable and payment options are flexible. We offer interest-free financing and accept cash, cheque, Visa, MasterCard, and debit.

Insurance plan coverage varies greatly, so we recommend asking your provider what your coverage includes. We will provide you the total cost of your treatment before your first appointment so you can determine your cost after your insurance coverage.

We do not direct bill to your insurance provider, but provide you with receipts and invoices so you can successfully process your claims.

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) recommends children should have their first appointment as young as seven years old. At PacificWest Dental Group, we believe you're never too young or too old for treatment. However, catching problems early can prevent issues later on in life.

The answer to this question may vary depending on your individual needs. When undergoing treatment, such as braces or Invisalign, you should have follow-up appointments every six to eight weeks. It ensures your treatment is going smoothly and will help you leave our office with an amazing smile even sooner.

Dentists are great at helping you keep your teeth healthy. However, orthodontists specialize in working with jaw issues and teeth misalignment. In fact, dentists usually refer patients to orthodontists to fix alignment problems or bite abnormalities. Call PacificWest Dental Group for a consultation today!

Orthodontists are dentists who went through two to three years of additional training to specialize in the bite, and teeth and jaw alignment. Orthodontists and dentists are a team who work together to improve your oral health. However, they each have their own roles in your treatment. Dentistry focuses on treating the teeth, gums, nerves, and jaw. In contrast, orthodontics is a specialty field that focuses on correcting bites, malocclusions, and straightening the teeth.
