Starting orthodontic treatment is a meaningful moment in a teenager’s life, but it often comes with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. The first months with braces can feel challenging because they affect not only physical comfort, but also daily routines, confidence, and social interactions. For parents in Surrey, understanding this transition goes beyond knowing how braces work. It requires recognizing how teens experience change and how small frustrations can influence their overall attitude toward treatment.
When support is consistent and well guided, teens tend to adapt much faster and feel more in control of the process. Without that support, even minor discomforts can become bigger obstacles, leading to resistance or lack of consistency. The goal during these first months is not perfection, but helping your teen build confidence and stability while adjusting to something new.
Braces In Surrey: What Teens Really Experience At The Beginning
The early stage of wearing braces is usually the most demanding, both physically and emotionally. From a physical perspective, teens often deal with soreness during the first few days and after adjustments. Eating becomes more selective, and speaking may feel slightly different at first. These changes are temporary, but they can feel intense when everything is happening at once, especially in a school environment where routines are already full.
At the same time, there is a strong emotional component that parents sometimes underestimate. Teenagers are highly aware of how they look and how others perceive them. Braces can make them feel self conscious, particularly in social situations, presentations, or group interactions. Even if others are not paying attention, the internal perception can affect confidence, participation, and mood.
This combination of physical discomfort and emotional sensitivity is what makes the first months so important. When teens feel understood and supported, they tend to adapt faster and regain their confidence sooner.
How Parents Can Provide Meaningful Support
Supporting a teen through orthodontic treatment is not about constant reminders or strict control. It is about creating a structure that helps them feel capable, while also giving them space to take ownership of their routine. Parents who approach this stage with empathy and practical guidance usually see better long term results.
- Help your teen adjust their diet during the first weeks by offering softer foods that are easier to chew and less likely to cause discomfort;
- Encourage consistent oral hygiene without making it feel like pressure, focusing on building habits rather than enforcing rules;
- Acknowledge the emotional side of the experience by listening without minimizing their concerns about appearance or discomfort;
- Normalize the process by reminding them that most people go through orthodontic treatment at some point and that the adjustment period is temporary;
- Create simple routines around school days, such as preparing braces friendly lunches and ensuring they have what they need for hygiene during the day;
- Stay observant without being intrusive, noticing changes in mood or behavior that may indicate frustration or difficulty adapting;
- Reinforce progress by pointing out improvements over time, helping them stay motivated and focused on the long term result.
These actions may seem small, but together they create a sense of stability that helps teens navigate the early stages of treatment more confidently.
Building Confidence During The Adjustment Period
Confidence does not return all at once. It builds gradually as teens become more familiar with their braces and start to feel comfortable in their daily environments again. Parents play a key role in this process by helping shift the focus from what feels different to what is improving over time.
Encouraging participation in normal activities is important. Teens should feel supported to speak in class, socialize with friends, and continue their routines without feeling held back by their braces. Avoiding situations can reinforce insecurity, while gentle encouragement helps rebuild confidence.
It also helps to reframe the experience in a positive way. Orthodontic treatment is a step toward long term health and self confidence. When teens understand the purpose behind the process, they are more likely to stay engaged and committed.

Hello! I’m Dr. Kevin Lee, a certified orthodontic specialist at PacificWest Dental Group, proudly serving the vibrant communities of Vancouver and Surrey. My journey into orthodontics began back in high school. As a teenager wearing braces, I became fascinated by the intricate blend of art, engineering, and biology that defines this field. This early experience ignited a passion that has guided me throughout my career.
I pursued my academic journey at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 2006, followed by a Doctor of Dental Medicine in 2011. After a year-long residency at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, I returned to UBC to complete a combined Master of Science in Craniofacial Biology and a Diploma in Orthodontics in 2015. That same year, I achieved certification from both the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Orthodontics.
With over a decade of clinical experience, I remain deeply committed to staying at the forefront of orthodontic advancements. At PacificWest Dental Group, we prioritize personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring comfort and care every step of the way.
